Turning a photo into a useful observation

Record more than a species name: the context, uncertainty and your own notes make a photo a more useful observation.

Record what you actually saw

An observation is valuable for more than its species name. The date, habitat and visible details belong in the record too. Describe whether you found it on a tree trunk, beside water or in an open meadow. Leave uncertain information unknown rather than filling it with a guess.

Give the photo context

Different angles can be more informative than a single view, provided you can take them without disturbing the organism. Describe features you actually observed, such as leaf arrangement or wing markings. Do not present an unmeasured size as an exact measurement.

  • Check that the organism is clear enough in the image.
  • Review the date and location; hide sensitive coordinates.
  • If several organisms are visible, explain which one you are recording.

Read model results as candidates

QoraxAI suggests candidates using visual similarity. A similarity score does not mean the identification is certainly correct. Compare scientific names, candidate images and your notes. A human or object photo should not produce a species identification; reporting such errors helps improve the evaluation set.

Improve the record together

You can opt into review by experts approved for the relevant groups. Consensus uses multiple independent opinions. You decide whether to adopt the suggested species. New photos or notes may mean earlier reviews need to be reconsidered.
